Winter is here! As snow-covered slopes, glittering alpine romance and après-ski make a short break in the mountains sound very tempting, we present some of the hippest winter escapes and charming retreat destinations set within breathtaking mountain scenery.
A private retreat with fresh mountain air: Brücke 49 is a charming villa located on the "sunny side” of the river in Vals, in the Swiss canton of Graubünden. After belonging to the local Furger family for three generations, the house, built in 1902, was bought by designer Ruth Kramer and marketing professional Thomas Schacht in 2010. Following careful and loving renovation, this alpine retreat opened to guests in December as a destination for rejuvenating short breaks in the countryside.
Each of the rooms has its own special atmosphere, furnished in an eclectic mix of old and new; with antique furniture, contemporary handicrafts, treasures picked up at flea markets in Denmark and a few classic design icons. ”We have always been fascinated by the simple and good things in life. Whenever we travel ourselves, we look for places to stay that are small and cosy and often luxurious in their approach to the little things that we tend to notice. We appreciate original ideas and like to be around things that are so well designed and crafted that they will last for a very long time” explained the Swiss-Danish couple.
The couple’s dedication to luxury can be seen throughout the entire house: from the choice of bed linens, the drinks in the fridge and the art on the walls, right through to the organic breakfast with freshly baked bread and locally sourced cheese.
Icy and extravagant – a wintery adventure in an ice palace offers an attractive alternative to classic luxury retreats and elegant boutique hotels. Each year, as the clear starry skies filled with northern lights leads the land into its darkest season; the temporary ice structure begins to take shape on the banks of the river Torne.
Once only a small igloo made of ice and snow, today it is the largest ice hotel in the world; offering approximately 140 beds in double rooms and suites.
